Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to challenge certain decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
