Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
